Mission:  Maya means "illusion" and Fusion means "the blending of...", so MayaFusion translates to "the blending of dance illusions". The MayaFusion DanceSchool explores with diverse dance forms with the integration of yoga, meditation, martial arts and theatre.  FusionDance, thus, includes a range of movements such as Bollywood Style, Modern & Contemporary Dance, Bharatanatyam (a South-Indian classical dance) , semi-classical Indian Dances and Yoga Dance to both Eastern and Western songs & music.      An authentic and well-seasoned dancer thrives for a deep trust in imagination, passion and pure love, in order to fully embrace the art of innovative choreography and performance.

Profile:   Sumona Vohra, Founder, Artistic Director, Teacher, Choreographer and Performing Artist of MayaFusion DanceSchool began her study of dance in 1989.  Her creativity/choreography/performance is influenced by her study of various styles of Bharatanatyam (for 15 years with different Gurus, as a disciple of Charu Narasimhan, Meena Telikcherla, Ranidevi, Ramya Harishankar and Janaki Rangarajan)..  In addition, she is trained in semi-classical Indian Dances, Modern-Contemporary Dance, Bollywood dance, Kickboxing (Martial Arts), yoga & YogaDance, as well meditation and theatre/drama.  She has performed in several Diwali and Holi shows at George Mason University and George Washington University, dance dramas and plays. Currently, along with teaching, choreography and conducting workshops, she performs FusionDance and Bharatanatyam in numerous Local, National, and International Cultural Dance Shows/Events, Weddings and other special occasions Nation-wide and abroad.

Teaching Method: Fusion Dance is taught to children age 5 and up, as well as adults. There is a blend of both Eastern and Western teaching methods. Indeed, it is a high priority to encourage the passion of dance to students. At first, students start by learning the fundamentals of various dance styles, martial arts & yoga movements—its rhythm, posture, gestures, momentum, form & stillness, as well as, theatre and/or abhinaya (facial expressions). Later, as they blossom, they acquire a deeper comprehension of choreographic interpretation and performance by the notions of grace, dignity, perseverance, compassion and stamina.

“I am deeply fascinated by the therapeutic & healing powers of dance, movement, yoga and theatre, which is why my performances and teaching embrace themes relevant to Self-Love and Self-Acceptance.  That is because they are the foundation of not only a wholesome and complete artist, but of a spiritual being in Human Form.  Dance, indeed, is a prayer, a meditation, a sacred dialogue and union between the Divine and the Self.  Through self-discovery, one becomes an authentic dancer and choreographer.  By the same token, through dance, one discovers and loves Oneself.  Dance is not just a great physical exercise, but it is a wonderful mental, emotional and spiritual healing therapy as well.  Ultimately, the true test of a brilliant dancer is one who excels not only in passion, along with that, also excels in the originality of choreography and performance.”
